John C. Campbell Folk School Exhibit
Folk School Announces Exhibit at Big Canoe

Brasstown, NC - May 5, 2009: John C Campbell Folk School of Brasstown, NC will present a fine craft exhibit and documentary showing in a Choctaw Village home at Big Canoe in north GA from June 6 to July 19, 2009.

The John C. Campbell Folk School will bring the experience and ethos of the school to north Georgia in an exhibit that showcases the work of many accomplished instructors, resident artists and students, including nationally-recognized artists and artisans in their fields such as painter Billie Shelburn, blacksmith Elmer Roush, potter Mike Lalone, and fiber artist Martha Owen. Their work exemplifies the quality of the instructors at the Folk School and also speaks to what each has to impart to students who study with them. The show will also include a media area for viewing the Emmy-nominated documentary ‘Sing Behind the Plow,’ a video that details the history of the school and its place within Appalachian folk culture.

The exhibit will be open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm each week with special group showings by appointment on Tuesdays. Contact Ann Young at Big Canoe (706) 268-6392 or by email: ann.young@bigcanoe.com about group showings.

The John C Campbell Folk School was started in 1925 and now offers over 800 week and weekend classes a year for adults to study traditional and contemporary craft, art, music, dance, cooking, gardening, photography and writing in a non-competitive environment of small classes and friendly, knowledgeable instructors. The award-winning school recently earned the title of one of the "100 Best Vacations to Enrich Your Life" in a National Geographic travel book written by Pam Grout. The school is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The John C. Campbell Folk School is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization.
